ELECTRICAL APPRENTICE

Location: Sudbury, Ontario

Reports to: Manager

Purpose and Scope of Position:

An Electrical Apprentice are trainees who work under the supervision of a journeyperson electrician. As an apprentice your job is to follow directions assist with the electrician’s duties as directed.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Adherence to policies and procedures by actively promoting a safe and productive work environment
  • Accountable to meet safety compliance and assist with achieving projected work goals
  • Report for work-fit and ready to positively engage in the day’s work activities by following directives and engaging as a team player, safely and efficiently performing daily work duties
  • Address unsafe conditions immediately, rectifying or isolating and reporting – STOP and CORRECT
  • Measure, cut and bend wire and conduit using measuring instruments and hand tools
  • Maintain tools, vehicles and equipment and keep parts and supplies in order
  • Preform semi-skilled and unskilled labouring duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment
  • Disassemble defective electrical equipment, replace defective or worn parts, and reassemble equipment, using hand tools
  • Thread conduit ends, connect couplings, and fabricate and secure conduit support brackets, using hand tools
  • Examine electrical units for loose connections and broken insulation and tighten connections, using hand tools
  • Drill holes and pull or push wiring through openings, using hand and power tools
  • Strip insulation from wire ends, using wire stripping pliers, and attach wires to terminals for subsequent soldering
  • Trace out short circuits in wiring, using test meter
  • Install copper-clad ground rods, using a manual post driver
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills, and Knowledge:

  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrates good organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Successful or working towards completion of relevant apprenticeship program or education is required
  • High School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalency
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform their duties in a safe
    and efficient manner

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 40lbs (18kg)
  • Ability to use the bend, crouch, climbing and reaching motions
  • Prolonged periods of standing or kneeling
  • Ability to work in all working conditions and weather conditions (in acceptance of safe work conditions)
  • Ability to work all shifts, including nights and weekends (flexible hours)
  • Ability to work rotational work – 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off (12 hours/day) – if required
  • Ability to travel, when and if required
